Oriental Gardens can’t compete with Nature

Smith River Canyon
Smith River Canyon

There is a wonderful river canyon west of Grants Pass and Cave Junction, OR … near Hiouchi and Crescent City, CA. It’s more magnificent than an oriental garden.  I mentioned it a few days ago.

The photo  barely expresses. Highway 199 winds through the canyon above the Smith River, which gets it’s blue color from Serpentine mineral rock. The rocky slopes have all sorts of small oaks, madrones and other species like Douglas Fir, Incense Cedar and Port Orford Cedar. Between late October and May, there are plenty of seasonal waterfalls.

It’s the eastern gateway to the Coast Redwoods.
