If you ever explore Jedediah Smith redwood park’s west edge adjacent to Crescent City, you may spot a hulking giant trunk with a cave in it — the Church Tree redwood — and it has a goose pen inside it the size of a room. A few months ago, I placed my flash units inside to show approximately how big the interior is. Entirely blackened by fire. It even has a vaulted ceiling. There are other redwoods with caves this big, like Caveman, but there are not many. Caveman is more of a north interior redwood, in the Clark’s Creek area. The Church Tree coast redwood is farther west, a short distance beyond Organ Donor’s Grove.
