Mountain Lion / Aug 2013 / Redwood N.P.

As a reminder … one more recent sighting of Mountain Lion, aka Cougar, near Nickel Creek Campground.

It’s no surprise there are Mountain Lion in the area. It’s their home. They have been photographed or seen in Prairie Creek redwoods, and other nearby locations too.

FYI … a page about them, and bear >> http://www.mdvaden.com/redwood_bears_cougars.shtml

They can’t be confused with Black Bear or other animals. They are giant size cats, like the photo attached below. If you encounter one, be calm and let it leave the area. Maintain eye contact and back away slowly. If it aggressively engages with you, aggressively resist and fight back … make lots of noise … wave arms, packs, sticks, etc…

Gather children in close to you. Actually, I wouldn’t let small children roam in the redwood parks. Not even like a few hundred feet where I could see them, even if they were in pairs. Two small children, say 4 and 7 years old, are rather small targets for prey. Small children should always be in very close proximity IMO …

Nickel Creek Campground, for those interested, is ..

Marked north access is at the end of Enderts Beach Road off Hwy 101. Marked south access is on east side of Hwy 101 at mile marker 15.6
