Howland Hill Rd. through the midst of Jedediah Smith Redwoods is one of the most memorable drives in Redwood National and State Parks. The aim of this post is a reminder that Howland Hill Rd. can be closed in May or June for maintenance. And the closure may span 2 weeks … apparently with the exception of weekends. So 14 days minus 4 weekend days is 10 days of potential closure.
If this drive is a really big deal for you, and your itinerary is very flexible, contact the redwood parks visitor centers for updates about whether the road is open or if plans for maintenance have been determined. The road may be closed briefly other times of year due to fallen trees, erosion, small slide, etc.. It has been open most of the time and the drive is spectacular. It’s also the way to reach Stout Grove when the summer season temporary bridge is not in place from the campground / day use side of the Smith River.
