Another 24′ diameter discovery

The past few weeks, another coast redwood greater than 24 ft. diameter was discovered in Redwood National and State Parks. The average diameter at dbh, chest height, was 24.80 ft..

Redwood National and State Parks recently posted on Facebook that a 23.7  ft. wide  Big Tree in Prairie Creek was the 3rd widest known. The recent discovery stretches that claim a tad bit more.  There are now at least 10 Coast Redwoods wider than the Big Tree in Prairie Creek. No less than 10 coast redwoods are  over 24 ft. diameter. The widest  range up to 27.4 ft. wide. Just within the last 2 years, the widest new discoveries included diameters of:

1. 27.4 ft.
2. 27.2 ft.
3. 25.9 ft.
4. 25.1 ft.
5. 24.8 ft.
6. 24.80 ft.

The image below is an older girth discovery, called Sir Isaac, in  Redwood National and State Parks. We decided not to post an image of this particular April, 2014 discovery. But this gives an idea what 24 feet wide looks like with a person for scale.
