June, 2013, the road was closed to Tall Trees Grove, indefinitely. For visitors vehicles at least. The grove and trail were reported as available by bike or hike, but that takes about 7 miles coming down from Bald Hills Rd.. Or, another alternative of hiking 7 miles along Redwood Creek Trail, and using the parking lot much closer to Orick.
You can see my page for Tall Trees Grove …
The partial closure was a disappointment, and it’s one of 7 places I wrote about on my Seven Wonders of the Redwoods page.
Putting aside money and budget reasons, I’m curious about whether this kind of closure impacts the feelings of workers who did the trail construction. Between approximately 2009 to 2010, nearly the entire upper 1/3 of the trail was diverted and reconstructed. That’s a lot of work on a near-daily basis.
If anyone reading this post worked spent some time on that trail improvement, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you encounter what’s virtually a trail closure like this, after you’ve spent weeks of your hard work.
For you visitor folks … hope you have a chance to see it someday.
