Late November, 2014, I updated pages after we remeasured the world’s tallest known maple and hemlock. A Bigleaf Maple called Humboldt Honey, and Western Hemlock called Tsunami. Each measured about 2 feet taller than a few years ago. The latest laser measurement was last November. I photographed the tops last winter and was aware of stem elongation indicating growth from 2013. They grew even more in 2014.
These grew to new height records amidst one of Northern California’s lowest rainfalls on record during a growing season.
Recently I heard some new height data related to Coast Redwoods. I was asked to keep the height numbers on the back burner until they are published … maybe in 2015. But I think its okay to mention that one Coast Redwood, for example, grew as much last year in 2014, as all four previous years of 2010 to 2013 combined.
The maple grew beyond 160 feet and the hemlock surpassed 273 feet.
