Best I know … the answer includes Gerald (Jerry) Beranek, presently near Ft. Bragg, California. And he conveyed that at least two others … Vassy and Castro … were got up there about 7 years before he did. I mentioned part of this this briefly on a book review page before … but it seemed worth reiterating, after posting about Beranek’s new Coast Redwood book recently.

My previous comments are on my review of The Wild Trees by author Richard Preston. See The Wild Trees review by M. D. Vaden

Actually … how any adventures, work or climbs by Beranek and a few others, did not find a small place in The Wild Trees, still puzzles me. Beranek is sort of a small legend among various circles of tree and arborist folk. His book on Fundamentals of General Tree Work is a professional classic, sitting on many a climber’s bookshelf or desk.

Jerry’s climbs were not scientific in nature. But the adventure and exploration aspect seemed worth pointing out. It should be evident that Beranek is an avid photographer too. He’s been shooting both film and digital for decades.

Lately, he and his wife, Terri, have spend a lot of time in the Northern California Coast Redwood forests, hiking, photographing, and exploring.

You can access adventures and history of the redwoods and climbing via his site www.atreestory.com

Ever been curious who the persons were to ascend and climb into old growth Coast Redwood canopy?
