May, 2015, John Montague from Humboldt, reported discovery of a new Coast Redwood diameter record. Joined by Zane Moore from from Colorado, they measured and confirmed a new diameter record of 29.2 ft.. That’s not down at ground level. The 29.2 ft. diameter was measured up at chest level, known as dbh. For girth comparison, the new Coast Redwood discovery is almost 4 ft. wider than General Sherman Giant Sequoia at chest height.
This was added to my Year of Discovery page for recent Coast Redwood discoveries page.
The latest diameter discovery is titan size, over 25,000 cu. ft. trunk volume. Its doubtful that images will be posted for this new 2015 discovery. The image below is my previous 2014 discovery, over 27 ft. diameter. Any future Coast Redwood discovery will need to be close to 30 ft. wide with a single trunk to become a new diameter record. John’s new discovery is significantly larger than the redwood shown belowfor volume.
